Educators value the success of all students. Educators care for students and act in their best interests.
In my 390 Practicum I made an effort to extend and build relationships beyond my classroom by hosting a gym basketball during lunch for students that wanted to engage in more play during the day. I soon found myself to be a rockstar walking down the hallways as students would stop and say how excited they were for lunch time to participate in playing basketball, it really was a rewarding feeling to see that my work and time was being acknowledged. For me this is the foundations of helping students along in their learning journey by building and harvesting these relationships, that in turn will benefit our classroom and school community. In my 490 practicum I would connect with each student interests and build relationship with each student prior to my practicum starting by observing a few classes to ensure students were comfortable with me being apart of their learning space. In particular, I would have one student who had a learning designation, who would draw in class, specially anything related to nintendo’ s Mario and was hesitant to perform other tasks. When I was teaching financial literacy in mathematics, I had an idea where this student could perform the task but in his own unique fashion. When counting up the total some of money using Canadian coins this student would represent different nintendo characters as different coin values and would represent his answer in terms of each characters drawn and their specific representation of their value. This is allowed the student to be engaged in this learning activity and provided a differentiated approach to reach out this learner, but also allowed myself to assess this student who showed comprehension of learning content despite displaying it in a different context.
