Educators contribute to the profession.
During my first practicum I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity and space to provide lunch hour basketball in the gymnasium for students who were interested in this extra curricular activity. This was important to me, as I recall when I was younger on how I as student use to appreciate teachers who would open up the gym during lunch time to provide those students interested a chance to practice and develop their skills and to promote physical health. I slowly began to build relations outside my classroom environment due to coaching and refereeing the students. I would have liked to continue this during my next practicums, but due to Covid-19, unfortunately I was not able to provide students with an open gym during to avoid mixing learning groups. I plan on providing students physical health activities, so long as it meets the requirements of the school and the British Columbia Ministry of Heath’s Dr. Bonnie Henry.
Last Year I was also fortunate enough to be part of a math fair with schools here in School District 57 alongside my cohorts from the University of Norther British Columbia. We would set up stands and each provide students a math game ranging from the K-7 curriculum. I was selected to cover grade 6 math and so I decided that was going to work on fractions with the students by introducing a fun game involving a pizza fractions. The idea was that students worked for a pizzeria shop where customers can choose different types of pizza slices, combine them for a total of 8 slices that fit in one box. With the many variations of orders students would create their pizza fraction pie from a paper plate and the 4 different types of pizzas or fractions to total to 8 slices or a whole fraction of 1, This was an awesome experience to see that our hard work preparing for these events paid off by students showing interest and learning through the many math stations that were provided to them. By promoting play and manipulates, students were engaged and clearly enjoyed this fair, making it a success for everyone who was involved.
